(Picture: Met Police)A “jealous” man who conspired with his girlfriend to lure her ex to a location and shoot him repeatedly has pleaded guilty to attempted murder.
The 25-year-old victim was shot multiple times by Daniel Gaudin in front of terrified shoppers after enlisting his girlfriend Shannon Rule to set up a fake reconciliation meeting.
He suffered critical injuries and requires ongoing medical treatment since the broad daylight attack on June 22.
Kingston Crown Court heard that Rule had been in a relationship with both the victim and Gaudin.
Gaudin sent a number of threatening texts to the victim after finding out about him.
The abusive texts escalated into violence when Gaudin used Rule to lure the victim to a meeting near his home in Morden, where he planned to shoot him.
The victim agreed to the “honeytrap” meeting believing he would meet Rule alone.
Gaudin and Rule travelled to Morden by train from their homes in Waltham Forest where Rule met the victim.
Suddenly Gaudin appeared on the corner of Central Road and shot him multiple times without warning. Scores of people shopping at a nearby Sainsbury’s witnessed the shooting unfold.
Gaudin and Rule fled the scene together immediately after but got confused with their escape route led them back towards the scene of the crime in Central Road.
Armed police were waiting and apprehended them.
In interrogations Rule denied knowing that Gaudin had a gun or that he intended to shoot the victim.
Her lies quickly unravelled when officers discovered an array of texts she had sent to the victim warning him about Gaudin and that he was in possession of a firearm.
On Thursday, 22 December, Shannon Rule, 22, of Ashwood Road, Chingford, was found guilty of attempted murder.
Daniel Gaudin, 23, of Cranleigh Close, Waltham Cross, had pleaded guilty to attempted murder at an earlier hearing.
DI Iain Wallace, the officer who led the investigation, said: “Our thoughts foremost are with the young man whose life was changed in an instant following a shocking and utterly needless act of wanton violence, born out of Gaudin’s sheer jealousy and insecurity.
“He had no idea of what would unfold that day and the terrible injuries he sustained will mean he needs assistance for the rest of his life. I hope the convictions we have seen today will allow he and his family some small measure of comfort.
“Gaudin and Rule will now pay the price for their ruthless, calculated attack with their freedom.”
Gaudin and Rule are due to be sentenced at Kingston Crown court on 19 January 2023.
