Couple finds 50-year-old letter hidden in fireplace from previous owner who bought house for £3,000 back in 1971

A couple were stunned to uncover a letter hidden in their fireplace while renovating their home. Kathryn Stutely, 49, and her partner Neil bought their property in Wiltshire for £292,000 in 2019 and have since been doing up the house.

During the renovation they came across a note which stems back to 1971 from the previous owner of the house Mr E.C Pearce. The letter which was found amongst rubble revealed that the 37-year-old market trader paid just £3,000 for the same house just over 50 years ago.

The handwritten note also revealed that back when Mr Pearce bought the house he was earning just 65p an hour and that he put down a £300 deposit with his mortgage repayments costing just £5 a week.
