A County Durham event has been named one of the highlights of Black History Month.
Black History Month has taken place every October since 1987. Its aim is to reflect upon slavery and colonisation in British history, the Windrush generation, while showcasing the work of today's Black British creatives.
And a double bill performance at the Durham Gala Theatre is recommended as one of the country's top highlights to mark the occasion. Say it Loud and Black Sun by Ballet Black are a double bill, with the first part aiming to chart the struggles and inspiration behind the formation of the company, from the uncomfortable reasons behind its existence, to creating a repertoire and building up its reputation as a necessary part of the British ballet industry.

The second is a work that draws energy from the sun and moon to give rise to the descendants of ancestry.
The Guardian wrote: "Ballet Black celebrates its 20th anniversary with two new works at Durham’s Gala Theatre and Cinema. In 2001, Cassa Pancho founded the ballet company to give a platform to dancers of Black and Asian descent.
"Say It Loud, choreographed by Pancho, charts Ballet Black’s journey to becoming an industry name. Black Sun, choreographed by Gregory Maqoma, explores the power of the moon and sun."
Ballet Black takes place on Friday October 28, and you can find out more here. To read the full article Guardian article on the 10 UK highlights of Black History Month, click here.
