County Council update after large sinkhole closes road in Nottinghamshire town centre

An investigation is underway to establish the cause of a sinkhole in a town centre. Nottinghamshire County Council has issued an update after a large sinkhole was reported on Queen's Road, Newark, on the morning of Tuesday, April 18.

A section of road was closed from Lover's Lane roundabout to North Gate and is expected to remain that way for some time. Via East Midlands attended the scene to assess the sink hole and cordon it off to protect members of the public.

A Highways Manager from Nottinghamshire County Council said: “We were made aware of an issue on Queen's Road, Newark, where a hole has appeared in the road. We have made the area safe and have a team on site to establish the cause of the collapse.

“We thank residents and road users in the area for their patience and will be able to let them know about plans for repair once investigations are complete. We understand that it will cause disruption and to ask road users to avoid the area if possible."
