John David “JD” Souther, a highly influential songwriter and musician known for his contributions to the country-rock sound of the 1970s, has sadly passed away at the age of 78. His collaborations with iconic artists such as the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt have left an indelible mark on the music industry.

Souther, who played a key role in shaping the Southern California sound, was behind several of the Eagles' biggest hits, including “Best of My Love,” “James Dean,” 'New Kid in Town,' and “Heartache Tonight.” His musical prowess extended beyond the Eagles, as he also worked with James Taylor, Bob Seger, Bonnie Raitt, and many others, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and talented artist.

Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013, Souther was hailed as a “principal architect of the Southern California sound” and a significant influence on a generation of songwriters.

Born in Detroit and raised in Amarillo, Texas, Souther made his mark in Los Angeles in the late 1960s, where he formed a lasting partnership with Glenn Frey of the Eagles. Their collaboration began with the band Longbranch Pennywhistle and continued to produce timeless music that resonated with audiences worldwide.

Reflecting on his early days at The Troubadour, a renowned music club in West Hollywood, Souther fondly recalled the vibrant songwriting scene that shaped his career. It was at The Troubadour where he crossed paths with Linda Ronstadt and where the Eagles, led by Don Henley and Glenn Frey, took flight.

As a solo artist, Souther released several albums, including his self-titled debut in 1972 and the successful 'Black Rose' in 1976. His duets with Linda Ronstadt, such as “If You Have Crying Eyes” and “Hearts Against the Wind,” showcased his musical chemistry with the acclaimed singer.

One of Souther's standout solo hits, “You’re Only Lonely,” captured the hearts of listeners and solidified his place in the music industry. His songwriting talents extended to other artists, with hits like “Run Like a Thief” for Bonnie Raitt and “Faithless Love” for Ronstadt.

Aside from his musical endeavors, Souther also dabbled in acting, appearing in various television shows and films, further showcasing his diverse talents.

JD Souther's legacy as a gifted songwriter and musician will continue to resonate with music lovers for years to come, leaving behind a rich tapestry of timeless songs and unforgettable collaborations.
