Countdown's Susie Dent says Rachel Riley lends her bras as she spills show's secrets

Countdown star Susie Dent has revealed the Countdown team are so close that Rachel Riley has lent her bras in the past.

Dictionary Corner's Susie, 57, opened up on what it's really like to work on the popular Channel 4 words and numbers show as they celebrate 30 years on our screens.

Susie, who was recently forced to miss an episode of the show, revealed she sees mathematical genius Rachel as "the very best of friends – strong, principled and utterly loyal".

She added to the Daily Mail: "I often think she and I are two sides of the same coin.

"She is always impeccably groomed while I frequently have dresses on inside out or back to front.

"She lends me bras, tights — anything, in fact, that I have characteristically left at home."

Meanwhile, Susie admitted that although the show is serious in some parts there is "a lot of giggling on the Countdown set".

She added how "rude words" regularly come up on the letters board, "sometimes necessitating a hasty reshuffle so we can start again".

Cheeky innuendoes aren't the only thing to tickle the show's stars and others on set as Susie admits she makes "unconscious hand gestures" when defining a word – including 'areola', which causes her to make "circular motions over my chest", often tickling the Dictionary Corner guest.

The Channel 4 show has seen seven presenters host the programme throughout its history, with Anne Robinson quitting the role in May this year.

However, Richard Whiteley and Carol Voderman will always be affectionately known as the show's original presenters.

Susie said the combination of Richard as host and 61-year-old Carol's role on the letter board was "inspired".

The pair also "loved each other dearly", Susie added.

Presenter Richard passed away in 2005, after he was taken into hospital with pneumonia.

Later, Carol made a heartfelt tribute to Richard on the show as she said: "It's really odd to think that the man who's been here, the mayor in the chair for 23 years, won't be here anymore."

Countdown has since seen six more people take on the role of host, with Weakest Link star Anne, 77, being the most recent.

However, since her departure from the programme, the Countdown cast are said to feel "relieved", following reports of clashes on the set.

A source recently said: "Everyone is so relieved, to be honest. It’s all been a bit of a disaster with the fallouts and squabbles, we just want to draw a line under it and move on."

Anne is rumoured to have clashed with Rachel, 36, after Anne insisted the former Strictly star's microphone was muted to she alone could speak with contestants before the show kicked off.

Following the reports, Anne confirmed she had asked for Rachel and Susie's mics to be switched off before filming and said she liked "quiet" on set.

Anne said: "It was me wanting everyone to be quiet in the studio. I like everyone turning up on time and quiet, quiet, quiet. So we did have to iron that out. But that's it."
