Councillors back 30‑year plan for undersea tunnels from Shetland to Yell and Unst

OFFICIALS in Shetland have approved a plan which could link the islands of Yell and Unst to the Shetland mainland via undersea tunnels.

Shetland Islands Council has signed off a draft Implementation Route Map (IRM) which, subject to securing external funding, sets out a roughly 30‑year investment programme for inter‑island connectivity, including two subsea tunnels and eight new ferries.
