Councillor claims fly-tipping is to blame for fires in Lanarkshire village

A Murdostoun councillor has blamed fly-tipping as the cause for a fire at the weekend.

Fire services were made aware of a fire in Cleland at 6:40pm on Sunday, June 19, at the Swinstie Road bridge.

Facebook posts showed pictures of the blaze and claimed that tyres were set alight by youths.

A social media post stated: "We caught them setting up the tyres and we got a clear photo of one of them before they gave us a load of mouth and ran off, or so we thought.

"15 minutes later one of our kids playing outside saw the fire. Two trees were probably killed, and everything around us and all the way up Swinstie Road is covered in black. Who knows what's the damage to the bridge?"

Labour councillor Louise Roarty has said that illegal fly-tipping is to blame.

She told Lanarkshire Live: " “This is the third time in as many weeks that youths have been setting fires at Swinstie Bridge.

"Not only is it dangerous, but it also causes significant issues for nearby residents and I fear someone will be seriously hurt.

"Scottish Fire and Rescue have attended in the past which is a waste of resource. This issue is exacerbated by dumb dumpers giving these youths the opportunity to fireraise with illegal fly-tipping"

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 6:40pm on Sunday, June 19, to reports of tyres on fire at Swinstie Road, Cleland.

"Operations Control mobilised one appliance to the scene to extinguish the fire and make the area safe.

"There were no reported casualties."
