Council removes huge bonfire after concerns from young mum

An enormous bonfire that was being built close to the home of a young mother and her son has been removed.

Last week the ECHO reported on concerns from young mum Gold Onwuka after a huge pile of timber, furniture and other waste appeared on land close to her home in Rickman Street, Kirkdale.

Gold was deeply concerned about the potential dangers of the large bonfire - being built ahead of November 5 - with her two-year-old son Royal also living with her. She said a similar bonfire in the same place was built and set alight last year and caused damage to her property and forced her to move her son out of his room to protect him.

Speaking about the fire last year, Gold told the ECHO: "It was scary, I had to get my son out of his bedroom because it was closest to the big fire. He was only one year old at the time. The fire damaged a window in the house and burnt the frame."

Gold, who is currently doing a post-graduate course in teaching, said the sight of the bonfire being built this year had made her feel scared again. She added: "I should feel safe for me and my son in my home. I'm very worried. It is already big and will only get bigger."

After the story was published, the city council said it understood the concerns and would be working with partners to take action. This has now happened.

A tweet from the city council's account showed images of the huge pile of timber and waste being removed. One image showed a JCB digger being used to take away the items.

The tweet said: "Colleagues at Liverpool Street Scene have cleared a huge pile of timber placed close to houses in Kirkdale, following concerns raised by local residents and councillors. It is part of work in the run-up to Bonfire Night to keep communities safe."
