Council granted over £400,000 to combat rough sleeping in North Tyneside

North Tyneside Council has been allocated more than £400,000 this year to prevent rough sleeping and homelessness in the area.

The funds are part of a central Government fund totalling almost £316m to prevent family and individual homelessness as well as preventing domestic abuse victims from sleeping rough.

The local authority will receive £404,216 from 2023 to 2024, and £427,450 from 2024 to 2025. This council was granted £368,000 in 2021.

Conservative councillor for Preston, North Tyneside, Liam Bones said: "This funding will help individuals who are at risk of becoming homeless pay deposits for new homes and mediate with landlords to avoid evictions. There is also a specific allocation to help councils support homeless domestic abuse victims, meaning people do not have to stay in abusive households.

"I'm hopeful that this funding will have a real positive on many people across our region, and while there is still more to do, this is yet another example of the Government being serious about levelling up in the North East."

The remaining North East local authorities were allocated the following amounts:

Gateshead - £563,834
Newcastle - £695,981
Sunderland - £525,300
South Tyneside - £386,735
Durham - £821,897
Northumberland - £529,533
