Council 'cuts off' road in parking bay blunder

A Sefton road was ‘cut off’ to traffic in a council blunder over parking bay lines.

The situation arose after a disabled parking bay was installed by contractors at York Road, in Crosby, earlier this week.

Local residents soon took to social media in exasperation because the parking bay was painted on the ground directly opposite another – leaving no space at all for cars to pass down the road.

Tagging Sefton Council in a post on Twitter yesterday one local resident named Lisa said: "Sefton Council can you explain this to me please."

She added: “How do I drive my car down the road that I live in to get to my driveway if a car is parked in this bay and both cars parked in the spaces facing! Don’t get me started on emergency services and bin collection etc!”

Another Twitter user Paul also tagged Sefton Council in a post, sharing an image that was added into a local Facebook group showing a small gap between the the painted bays, effectively cutting off the road to all traffic if both were occupied.

Paul said: “I agree that the disabled need parking and actually think there should be more of them, but can you explain why this one has popped on York road Crosby, surely it causes an access risk if parked in.”

Sefton Council responded to the posts on Twitter saying the reports had been logged.

After being alerted to the blunder, a contractor scrubbed away one of the parking bays.

A photograph taken earlier today shows the aftermath with scrubbed out lines now in place of the non-disabled parking bay.

The ECHO approached Sefton Council for comment about the incident and a spokesperson said: “As soon as we were informed of the mistake by a member of the public, we contacted the contractor and the markings were removed yesterday morning.”
