Council chiefs to offer staff minimum of £1,925 in new offer to end bin strikes

Council chiefs have agreed to offer staff a minimum of around £1,925 extra in pay in a bid to end the national bin strike.

Talks will continue today after leaders in council umbrella group COSLA revised an offer that would see extra cash going to the low paid.

Waste and recycling staff are on strike in council areas throughout Scotland due to a failure to agree a deal on pay, with offers of 3.5% and 5% rejected.

Edinburgh has become an eye sore due to black bin bags lining the streets and concerns have been raised about public health.

It is understood that COSLA leaders yesterday agreed to alter the offer after the Government stumped up more cash on top of the £140m they already provided.

Under the offer, the core element remains a 5% rise, but no staff member would get less than around £1,925.

This is the same flat rate figure offered to council workers in England.

However, one insider said it was by no means a “done deal” and questions would be asked about the offer.

Under the offer, the higher earners would still get more in cash terms than the low paid.

Also in the mix is the possibility of giving staff another day of annual leave.

Meanwhile, bosses at Public Health Scotland have told local authorities that the “decontamination of public areas where bins have overflowed may be required”.

It comes as the organisation warned that “if organic waste builds up it can become a risk to human health”.

People are being advised to double bag items such as food waste and used nappies or put them in containers.
