Could the UK be heading for one final heatwave of 2026?

  • The Met Office has indicated that one final UK heatwave before the end of the month is not out of the question as high pressure and warm air move in from continental Europe .
  • A deep low-pressure system over the Atlantic is expected to pull warm air from the continent, potentially raising temperatures across the UK into the upper 20s by the end of next week.
  • The potential warm spell follows a heat dome over mainland Europe that triggered temperatures above 40C in Spain and Portugal earlier in September.
  • Meteorologists warn the warmer conditions could be cut short by an uncertainly timed cold front from the west, returning weather to more changeable autumn norms.
  • The immediate forecast sees windy and rainy conditions over the weekend give way to drier, brighter, and slightly warmer weather by early next week.
