Could the Celtics entice Kelly Oubre Jr. to Boston?

The Boston Celtics have one roster spot remaining. Given their current cap situation, the team will unlikely utilize its taxpayer mid-level exception. Nor is it expected to seek a sign-and-trade with the recently acquired trade exception from trading Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks. Both of those options would hard-cap Boston for the upcoming season.

With that in mind, the most likely outcome is Brad Stevens looks to add a role player to the rotation courtesy of a veteran minimum deal. In a recent episode of “The AdamTaylor NBA Show,” the Celtics analyst floated the idea of going big fish hunting by opening communication with Kelly Oubre Jr.

Last season, Oubre earned $12.6 million. Having been in the NBA for eight seasons, a veteran minimum contract would pay Oubre $2.8 million for the upcoming season.

With almost a $10 million pay cut on the table, it’s unlikely Oubre would be willing to join the Celtics this summer.

However, should Stevens pull off another masterstroke, Oubre would add another dimension to the Celtics’ bench and further strengthen their status as championship favorites ahead of next season.
