Could Leon Balogun face Celtic if Rangers appeal red card? Claim may do Gio van Bronckhorst more harm than good

As it stands Leon Balogun is set to miss Rangers' Old Firm meeting with Celtic after being sent off against Motherwell.

And an appeal against his red card for taking out Dean Cornelius may do Giovanni van Bronckhorst more harm than good – as he could then lose the defender for another game at home to Dundee United if any claim is not upheld.

As with most straight red card decisions the Ibrox club have the right to appeal to the SFA over Nick Walsh's call and before the outcome of any appeal a ban is temporarily lifted.

But SFA 'Fast Track' cases are designed to put the incident in front of the SFA's three-person panel of former referees before their club's next match.

For example, Hibernian's Ryan Porteous was recently hauled up at Hampden within four days for his recent appeal for 'wrongful dismissal'.

That resulted in a three-match ban with an extra game then tacked on under section 13.21.8 of the judicial panel protocol which states an additional one-match suspension should be handed out in this scenario:

"In the event of a Claim being dismissed the Tribunal must then Determine whether:

  • The Claim had no prospect of success;
  • The Claim was an abuse of process or a delaying tactic for the sanction originally imposed;
  • The Claim was frivolous."

Balogun showed intent to win the ball but went over the top of the ball and his studs made clear contact with Cornelius' ankle.

Even Rangers legend Ally McCoist insisted he had no problems with the decision live on Sky Sports but his qualm was that Well defender Juhani Ojala did not then see red for a similarly rough challenge minutes later.

A successful fast track appeal would free him up for Celtic but his fate would be in the hands of the judicial panel and if they believe the claim had no chance of succeeding it would spell a further game on the sidelines.

Ibrox manager Van Bronckhorst said: "Obviously there were two tackles, both with the intention to win the ball but the margins are really close in those tackles.

"We just have to accept the red card we had, we couldn't do anything about it and it's a decision of the referee."
