There is no secret that the Raiders need cornerback help. It is the one position that the team has failed to address this offseason. The Raiders actually lost some depth at cornerback with Amik Robertson signing with the Lions in free agency.
The Raiders are expected to address their cornerback need early in the 2024 NFL Draft, but it would be wise for them to add a veteran now before then. But what veteran would make the most sense?
Xavien Howard, Adoree Jackson, and Steven Nelson are all players who have been bounced around as potential options for Las Vegas. But Stephon Gilmore could be a player of interest. Here is what ESPN writer Matt Bowen had to say about Gilmore entering free agency:
Gilmore, who will turn 34 a few weeks into the 2024 season, played productive football for the Cowboys last season, grabbing two interceptions and breaking up 10 passes. You can still see the physical coverage skills on tape, and Gilmore plays with veteran technique. He’s a fit for a contending team looking to add a corner with inside/outside ability.
Gilmore still has a lot of good football left in him, but he is best suited as a No. 2 outside cornerback in a zone-heavy defense. His price tag is low and he is the type of veteran that would make sense with a very young defense.
Don’t be surprised if Gilmore inks a deal in the upcoming weeks. He’ll want to sign ahead of the draft, and the Raiders seem like a good destination for Gilmore to finish his career.
