Burnout is a big deal. It’s not just a buzzy term for Zillenials still struggling with hustle culture and the grindset (urgh). The World Health Organisation includes it as an occupational phenomenon in the International Classification of Diseases. If your workplace stress festers unmanaged for too long, people’s mental health and energy levels become severely impacted.
The last time I burned out was during the pandemic, when I quit my high-pressure digital media job and took up shepherding a flock of Zwartbles sheep. That lasted all of a few weeks before I started a part-time masters degree and got an (admittedly less pressurised) job editing a long-form journal.
