Cotham club created to unite a divided city through music

The Cotton club was a New York city nightclub during the 1920s and 1930s, the club’s curator, Owney Madden whose nickname was “the killer” due to his activities as a gangster, wanted to provide black entertainment, to a wealthy whites only audience.

Although the name is not entirely accidental, The Cotham club, unlike the Cotton Club, aims to de-segregate the city, not only in terms of race but in age, faith and social class. The new music club that premieres this Friday (April 29) at Cotham Parish Church will be an experiment in diversity, with the aim of breaking down historical and contemporary barriers that divide people across Bristol.

The new music club that will be held monthly on a Friday will feature International musicians and aims to bring together people who at least already have one thing in common; their access to the 72 bus route and the Suburban Bristol Railway. In between songs, the club’s curator David Mowat hopes students will speak to pensioners and Israelis with Palestinians.
