Costco food court removes chairs from tables, customers and disability advocates don't love it

Costco (COST) -) has built a loyal following over the years, and it’s not just for its buy-in-bulk business model. The Costco food court has become almost synonymous with the warehouse shopping experience. Customers shop the store, get their goodies through the checkout, and then it’s off to the food court for ridiculously cheap hotdogs, pizza, sandwiches, and more.

Getting through the store first is no small feat. By the time their shopping is done, many customers are ready to take a load off while they enjoy fast, cheap food. Except according to one Redditor, their local Costco has replaced the sit-down style eatery with standing tables – and customers do not like it.

In South Korea, the customer claims to have encountered the new standing-room-only food court design. The writer posted a picture along with the post showing tables that "no children (or persons under 4 feet tall) are able to use." They go on to describe propping a leg up on a table crossbar to allow their toddler to sit on it and enjoy her ice cream, which they say was "not an easy task".

More in retail:

Customers from all across the world may be worried, but the change may not be coming to the Costco store near you. In the comments, other stores in Montana and Japan were said to have included standing tables, but those were in addition to the already available seated options. Others speculated that the change to the store in South Korea may be an effort to discourage loitering.

Still, at this particular Costco, eliminating food court seats entirely makes the space inaccessible to a lot of customers, including those with disabilities. Large families certainly make up a large base of the store's consumer base, but at this store, they also would be forced to stand around if they want to fill up the family at the food court.
