Costco's custom cakes have often been popular with shoppers when it comes to celebrations, but a recent mishap has gone viral online after one shopper placed an order that was taken a little too literally.
The discount retailer offers a 48-hour service for personalised cakes, with customers having the option to write a special message for the recipient.
However, one shopper, according to the Daily Star, got something they ‘didn’t need’ when their request was comically lost in translation.

The customer had picked out a white rectangular cake, and filled in a form which asked some basic questions. Wanting to keep the appearance minimalistic, they requested ‘no writing’ and ‘no designs’.
However, the bakery visitor did ask for ‘red frosting on the perimeter for top/bottom’, even going so far as to draw a little diagram of how they wanted the icing to be piped along each edge.
Despite their best efforts, the customer’s order was misunderstood - and the final design was not quite what the customer was expecting.
Instead of red piping around the edges, they received a plain white cake with their diagram iced on top.
They seemed to see the funny side though – as a picture of the blunder was posted on a Reddit thread. In the r/funny forum, a user wrote: “Costco will give you exactly what you know you didn’t need.”
The post garnered more than 109,000 upvotes – and many found the cake fail to be equally as amusing.
One commenter said: “I laughed so hard I nearly woke up my baby.” Another said: “The good news is they did read both pages of instructions.”
While a third wrote: “I’m crying laughing, I’d lose my mind if this happened to me.” And a fourth commented: “That’s amazing. I would not be upset.”
Each Costco cake serves 48 and sells for £16.49, with more than a dozen designs to choose from, including dinosaurs, princesses and even a football pitch. You can then choose from vanilla or chocolate sponge, chocolate, jame or vanilla fillings, and finally, chocolate or white icing.
Costco members can also add a personalised message up to 50 characters, before selecting a store for collection, which includes Trafford Park and Oldham stores. Just be sure you’re clear in your instructions - or you may end up with an unexpected order much like the unfortunate shopper above!
