Costa Rica Hepatitis A Outbreak Tops 770 Cases as CDC Posts Travel Notice Centered on San José Province

CDC Costa Rica Hepatitis San José Vaccine

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted a new travel health notice on Sept. 18 for a hepatitis A outbreak in Costa Rica, noting that most cases have been reported in San José province. The alert is a Level 1 notice, the lowest of CDC's four levels, which asks travelers to practice usual precautions rather than change their plans.

The numbers behind the notice are significant. Costa Rica confirmed 772 hepatitis A cases through epidemiological week 32 of 2026, more than double the 373 cases recorded in all of 2025, according to a Ministry of Health surveillance bulletin reported by Infobae. San José province accounted for 562 of those cases, roughly seven in 10 nationwide.
