Cost of owning a dog rises to £2,000 a year as price of food and vet bills soars

The rising cost of living is having a huge impact on everyone's personal finances - including the households with pets.

Animal welfare charity Battersea has estimated the cost of owning a dog in the UK is now approximately £2,000 a year - totalling £26,000 over the average pooch's lifetime.

This includes the cost of buying dog food and treats, poo bags, grooming, routine healthcare, insurance and pet sitting - but will vary dramatically depending on the size, age, type and health of the animal.
