Cost of living crisis street art in Bristol park goes viral

A piece of street art in a Bristol park about the cost of living crisis has gone viral on social media.

The work at St George's Park by Bristol urban artist John Doh shows Prime Minister Boris Johson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak. Sunak can be seen holding a candle with a caption that reads: "I am giving every household a candle for warm and light."

From the beginning of April, the cost of living increase is being felt across the country even more. On April 1, gas and electricity bills rose by an average of 54 per cent, while new council tax rates also came into force and National Insurance contributions are also increasing.

At the same time, UK inflation rose to seven per cent earlier this month - the highest it has been for 30 years. The artist said: "I often paint political figures and cover news topics.

"With rising energy/fuel prices, inflation increasing daily, combined with tax rises and no pay rises, it was in response to the government doing very little."

Next to Sunak, Boris Johnson can be seen wearing a party hat which says "happy birthday", followed by a quote which says "what party?". Johnson has been fined for a party which happened for his birthday during the first coronavirus lockdown in June 2020.

This meant Johnson has become the first sitting prime minister to break the law. The Tory leader offered a "full apology" for breaching his own Covid laws but refused to resign.

Cathy Green shared an image of the street art in Bristol with the caption: "Gotta love Bristol! At our local skate park earlier today."

Her tweet has since been liked more than 3,900 times and has received more than a thousand retweets.
