The long-rumored next game from 2018’s God of War director, Cory Barlog, could be an action-adventure spinoff title set in the God of War universe.
This new information first broke through the LinkedIn profile of a former senior writer at Sony Interactive Entertainment, as spotted on Resetera, who claims to have “helped shape narrative vision and creative direction” at Sony Santa Monica for a “new franchise within the God of War universe.”
Later, this news was corroborated by the notable industry leaker, NatetheHate, who also claimed that Faye, also known as Laufey, will be the lead character in this upcoming title. Fans may recall Faye as the giant warrior of Midgard, Kratos’ second wife, and Atreus’ mother, who’s repeatedly mentioned in the 2018 reboot and has a brief, flashback appearance in 2022’s God of War Ragnarok.
Cory Barlog’s God of War spinoff is reportedly targeting an early 2027 launch

It seems this Faye-focused action-adventure God of War title will be launching early next year, with a reveal planned for this year, at least according to NatetheHate. Geoff Kieghley’s Summer Games Fest showcase seems like a prominent stage for such a grand reveal.
Ever since the launch of 2018’s God of War, fans have been curious about Barlog’s next directorial project, especially since Eric Williams took over his role in God of War Ragnarok. Over the years, several rumors have accumulated, most suggesting that Barlog’s Sony Santa Monica team is working on a new sci-fi IP.
Last year, these rumors were debunked by notable games journalist Jason Schreier, who claimed that the sci-fi stuff is “nonsense” and that Santa Monica’s next game isn’t a new IP, but it might feel like one. Elsewhere, another prominent leaker, Shinobi602, hinted that Atreus won’t be the main protagonist in this alleged spin-off entry.
Sony Santa Monica writer’s LinkedIn job profile and NatetheHate’s report also align with Schreier’s Bloomberg’s report on Bluepoint Games’ closure earlier this year, in which he claimed that Sony was looking to create an MCU-style universe for God of War with multiple sequels and spinoffs. Barlog’s Faye-focused action-adventure spinoff could be next in line after this year’s 2D Metroidvania title, God of War: Sons of Sparta.
As for the next mainline entry in God of War, it’s heavily rumored to be set in Egypt. Earlier this month, Reddit user TheMorse_ discovered multiple hidden cutscenes in the God of War Ragnarok game files, one of which includes Atreus talking to someone named “Mau,” which is Egyptian for cat.
