Corrie's William Roache collects OBE as the longest-serving soap star in the world

Coronation Street's William Roache has collected his OBE as the longest-serving soap star in the world.

The actor, 90, who holds the world record for the longest-serving TV actor in a continuous role as Ken Barlow, was awarded the honour by King Charles.

Holding his medal outside Windsor Castle, Bill looked suitably smart sporting a black morning coat, charcoal trousers and a blue waistcoat.

Inside the royal residence, the actor shook the monarch's hand as he received the prestigious award.

Derbyshire-born Bill was recognised for his services to drama and charity.

Speaking about the honour last year, he said he was "immensely grateful" to Coronation Street, as "without the programme I wouldn't be in this position".

"I'm delighted to be receiving an OBE as it's such a wonderful honour. I can't tell you how proud I am," he continued.

"Coronation Street has given me so much in life and I absolutely love the programme and everyone who works on the show."

Having spent more than six decades on the cobbles, Ken Barlow has had his fair share of drama, including an ill-fated marriage with Deirdre, catching out a conman - and even a murder attempt.

However, before Bill caught the acting bug, he felt he had to follow his father into medicine, but joined the Army instead in 1953 when he worried he hadn't got the grades.

Being in the Forces left the star with ear damage after a bomb went off near Bill on a training exercise: “I lost 50% of my hearing,” he said, adding: “But I’ve learned to live with it.”

In 1956, the TV stalwart decided to pursue his real passion - acting.

After roles in various stage productions, Bill played a minor part in 1960 Norman Wisdom film The Bulldog Breed.

Shortly before joining Corrie, the actor bagged the leading role in a TV play called Marking Time .

And it was this gig the star said lead to his role in Corrie, after creator Tony Warren saw the play and thought Bill would make a perfect Ken.

Ken is still very much part of Weatherfield (ITV)

Ken has appeared on the ITV soap since its very first episode aired on December 9, 1960, and has been at the centre of some of Weatherfield’s most iconic storylines.

However, he will always be best known for his on/off relationship with bespectacled Deirdre, played by Anne Kirkbride - as well as his feud with love rival Mike Baldwin, who was played by Johnny Briggs.
