Stephen Reid's secret past has been exposed - as his ex-wife arrived on Coronation Street.
The ITV soap aired scenes this evening, which saw Gabrielle - played by Helene Maksoud - step onto the Cobbles, as she planned to expose Stephen (Todd Boyce) for his crimes as she accused him of stealing her money. Fans of the show have suspected Stephen has been up to no good and his ex-wife Gabrielle's arrival has proved that's the case.
She arrived on Coronation Street and quickly set to criticise her estranged husband Stephen, as she revealed he had been ignoring her calls. She issued him a chilling threat as she departed.
"How could you just up and leave?" she asked, "Without even a note. Do you know how worried I was?"
Stephen then replied to add: "I'm sorry, it was a difficult time for me," as Gabrielle revealed what he had done. "You've embezzled 200,000 euros of my company's money."
"It was just a loan for my business; everything was in such a mess," he said, as she urged him to pay her back if it had just been a loan. Worried, he told her to keep his voice down and speak in private.
She said: "I want my money. The only reason I didn't go to the police is because you'd have no chance of paying me back from behind bars. And what the publicity would do to my business."
Producer Iain MacLeod recently teased that there are some "dark" twists in the storyline ahead for Stephen.
"He will continue to get more and more desperate and more and more dark as the story unfolds. He’s a bit of a blank canvas. If you think back through his archive scenes, we don’t really know a lot about him," the Corrie boss revealed.
"So we thought, ‘Well actually, if we’re going to fill in those blanks, and we’re going to learn more about him, shouldn’t we make him dark, dangerous, interesting, scheming?' Mischievous is probably too light a term; but certainly, Machiavellian may be a stronger word."
He added: "Our viewers are so canny as well. As soon as [Stephen] arrived everyone was like, ‘Ah, I’ve got him marked, he’s gonna be a wrong’un,' and they’ll prove to be right in no small measure. I’m excited to see the audience’s reaction to the unfolding story when they realise that he’s every bit as desperate and dangerous as they predicted."
