Corrie legend Carla Connor's tragic past: Baby loss, psychosis battle and death 'curse'

Coronation Street 's Carla Connor has been a fan favourite since she debuted on the soap in 2006.

She joined the soap as part of the new Connor family, and was married to eldest sibling Paul before soon realising it was his brother Liam that she loved.

Her time in Weatherfield has been full of tragedy and difficult times, while she's also found herself in trouble with the law on many occasions.

Through family heartache and battles with her mental health, Carla has faced a lot - while she has also remained at the top of Underworld, and has managed to stay on track despite huge tests.

That could be about to change though thanks to killer Stephen Reid plotting her demise and seemingly trying to kill her.

But given everything she's been through over the past 17 years in Weatherfield, here's hoping she can once again get back on top.

Death 'curse'

Fans have often said over the years that there's a 'curse' with Carla and anyone she's ever been with.

Her husband Paul Connor was killed off in 2007 in a car crash, shortly after they broke up. Then after her fling with her brother-in-law Liam Connor, he was run over and killed a year later by a man hired by Tony Gordon.

Tony was Carla's current partner and got wind of their feelings for each other. Carla and Tony later split when she learned the truth and he moved on to Liam's widow, Maria, before he too was killed off in a fire at Underworld, which he started.

Then there was evil Frank Foster, Carla's fiancé who raped her when she revealed she no longer wanted to marry him. In 2012, he was killed by his mother Anne over his vile act.

Her current partner and the love of her life Peter Barlow has almost died on a few occasions, mostly linked to his alcoholism battle. Carla also had an affair with Peter's nephew Adam Barlow, and when the truth came out Adam was almost killed in a case of mistaken identity.

Sadly Carla has lost family members too, with her dad Johnny Connor recently dying in the sinkhole disaster, while her brother Aidan Connor took his own life in a harrowing storyline in 2018.

DNA bombshell

Johnny is Carla's dad (ITV)

Carla learned a shocking truth in 2015, when she found out her dad wasn't who she thought it was and that her biological father was Johnny Connor.

She was introduced to her half-siblings Kate and Aidan as a result, and soon she became very close with them.

Her brother Rob had known the truth for some time and dropped the bombshell on Johnny during a prison visit.

Psychosis battle

Carla has struggled with her mental health (ITV)

Carla has struggled with her mental health across the years on Corrie, and attempted to take her own life in 2011.

She struggled further in 2015 when she was blamed for a fire that killed Kal Nazir and Maddie Heath, and then after the factory roof collapse in 2019 she suffered with psychosis.

Having been blamed for the collapse which led to the death of Kate's partner Rana, she struggled with trauma and began acting out of character.

As well as disappearing for a while, the character was in danger when she suffered a severe psychotic episode and found herself at the top of the Victoria street fire escape.

Carla got the help she desperately needed and recovered, but her mental health has come into question again recently as she believes she has been experiencing psychosis once more - unaware that Stephen Reid is drugging her.

Harrowing rape ordeal and near-death experiences

Tony tried to kill Carla before his death in 2010 (ITV)

Carla was raped by her partner Frank when she tried to call off their engagement, leaving her struggling to cope.

In the fallout, Frank didn't face justice in court and was freed and he went on to con the factory out of Carla leaving her devastated.

While she was initially arrested for his murder when he was found dead, she was soon let go and managed to get the factory back.

Carla almost died in 2015 during a flat blaze which was caused by her long-time enemy and sister-in-law Tracy Barlow. Tracy started the fire to kill Carla, but she managed to get out.

Carla also tried to kill Tracy at one point, while they've finally brought that feud to an end it seems.

Years prior to this, Carla's ex Tony Gordon escaped prison over Liam's murder and kidnapped Carla, holding her hostage at the factory before setting it alight. Carla was rescued but Tony died.

Now, Carla is facing another deadly threat in Stephen who is trying to steal the factory from her, and possibly kill her in the process.

Tragedy and heartache

Carla has had her fair share of trouble and tragedy on the street. As well as finding out her brother Rob was a murderer, and being linked to other killers and dangerous men, she's also suffered loss and a huge health scare.

Sadly, Carla suffered a miscarriage in 2014. In 2018, she almost died from kidney failure and learned she needed to have a kidney transplant.

Her brother Aidan was her donor and the operation was successful. Carla has suffered with alcohol abuse in the past as well as having a gambling addiction.

Coronation Street airs on ITV1 and ITVX on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm.
