Coronation Street fans were left devastated over a shocking death on Wednesday night, with many claiming the wrong character died.
Cerberus the dog was killed off, after his debut in 2018, following an incident which led to him suffering from kidney failure.
Evelyn Plummer had to make the sad decision to have her beloved pet dog put to sleep after a sudden decline in his health.
But viewers were furious with the soap for the storyline, gutted to see the dog leave - and also heartbroken for Evelyn.
Viewers were in tears throughout the episode as the death aired, and some believed it was a mistake on the soap's part.
Many fans commented that the "wrong character" had died and that someone else should have been killed off, after months of drama on the street.
This week Cerberus, aged 10, had barely moved from the sofa and was being sick and was off of his food, leaving Evelyn and her grandson Tyrone Dobbs concerned.
Evelyn was devastated to be told by her friend Roy Cropper that Cerberus may have eaten an Eccles cake that had fallen on the floor in the café.
Eccles cakes contain raisins which can be poisonous to dogs, and Evelyn panicked as she realised it was the likely cause of Cerberus' ill health.
After tests were carried out at the vets, it was revealed that Cerberus' organs were not doing what they should and his heart rate was elevated, with the vet soon confirming his kidneys were not functioning and were in failure.
While the vet said there may be some options to try and help the dog, given his age and the severity of his condition he would not improve.
They told her that considering Cerberus' quality of life, the kindest thing to do would be to put him to sleep.
Viewers broke down in tears as they watched Evelyn say goodbye to her loyal friend, as he passed away.
But some fans were furious with the show for killing off beloved Cerberus and giving Evelyn such heartache.
Many commented that killer Stephen Reid is still roaming the streets and causing chaos, suggesting that if the soap was going to kill anyone off it should have been him.
Taking to Twitter, fans shared their upset over the storyline and suggested the soap had killed off the wrong character.
One viewer said: "Why can't they just kill Stephen off instead!" as another tweeted: "Why couldn’t they kill Stephen off the dog did no harm."
A third fan wrote: "Stop it #Corrie it's horrible seeing poor Evelyn having to put down her dog. Couldn't they have put Stephen down instead."
Another fan said: "This is awful. Why didn't they kill Stephen? Or anyone absolutely anyone but not the dog."
The comments kept coming too, with another reading: "Nah but why are #Corrie killing off Cerberus when Stephen still gets to roam the cobbles?"
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
