Coronation Street’s Summer Spellman suffered a devastating miscarriage in Monday evening’s episode of the ITV soap.
Summer (Harriet Bibby) saw her already complicated life take another turn in the episode after she had finally come to terms with her pregnancy.
While Summer had initially been planning to have an abortion, the teenager changed her mind when she met Billy’s parishioners Mike (Tom Lorcan) and Esther (Vanessa Hehir).
The couple have been desperate for a baby, but unable to have one of their own, they instead offered to adopt Summer’s baby and said they would give her £10,000.
Summer planned to use the money to pay for her boyfriend Aaron (James Craven)’s alcoholic father to go to rehab.
However, in the scenes on Monday evening he had been left questioning how the pair could afford the treatment, forcing them to lie and say they borrowed the funds from Billy (Daniel Brocklebank).
The lie made it even more important that they keep the truth from Billy for as long as possible, however that could now change after Summer’s tragic loss.
The pair had decided the only solution was to move away until after the baby is born, prompting Mike and Esther to offer Summer a room to move in with them, which she accepted.
However, disaster then struck when they heard from Jacob ( Jack James Ryan ) that Eric had been drinking again and rushed to confront him.
Suddenly, Summer doubled over in pain and realised she was bleeding to later discover she had suffered a miscarriage when the couple rushed to the hospital.
However, Coronation Street fans were left devastated for Summer and took to Twitter to commiserate for the teen.
One wrote: "Oh dear bad news coming for Summer," as another ominously added: "Poor Summer has had a miscarriage, she’s now in debt with Esther and Mike, the baby snatchers…"
Fellow fans were equally left fearful how Summer could be left indebted to the couple as one wrote: "After they took the money for his rehab, now she’s having a miscarriage. I’m sure the couple will be asking for their money back."
A second asked: "If Summer looses baby will she be obligated by law to return the money to that couple?" as another said: "Summer may need to get pregnant and sell another baby to get the drunk more rehab."
How will Mike and Esther take the news? And what will happen to Eric now they won’t have the money for his rehab?
