Coronation Street fans were left heartbroken and sobbing on Wednesday night, as a loved character was tragically killed off in upsetting scenes.
Evelyn Plummer had to make the agonising decision to have her beloved friend and pooch Cerberus put to sleep after a sudden decline in his health.
Cerberus, aged 10, had barely moved from the sofa and was being sick and was off of his food, leaving Evelyn and her grandson Tyrone Dobbs concerned.
Taking him to the vets, they were left worried when they were told he needed tests and that something didn't seem right.
Ahead of learning the results, Evelyn was devastated to be told by her friend Roy Cropper that Cerberus may have eaten an Eccles cake that had fallen on the floor in the café.
Eccles cakes contain raisins which can be poisonous to dogs, and Evelyn panicked as she realised it was the likely cause of Cerberus' ill health.
After being called back to the vets, Evelyn was told that the tests had revealed some concerning findings.
Cerberus' organs were not doing what they should and his heart rate was elevated, with the vet soon confirming his kidneys were not functioning and were in failure.
While he said there may be some options to try and help the dog, given his age and the severity of his condition he would not improve.
The vet told her that considering Cerberus' quality of life, the kindest thing to do would be to put him to sleep.
Evelyn and Tyrone were shocked and devastated but realised it was the right thing to do for Cerberus.
In heartbreaking scenes, Evelyn and Tyrone were given some time with the dog to say goodbye, and they were also allowed to be with him in his final moments.
Tyrone broke down and left the room, as Evelyn thanked her loyal companion for being her best friend and best boy.
As Cerberus was given an injection, he peacefully passed away with Evelyn by his side.
She told him: "Just sleep my little angel," as she stroked him and thanked him for his unconditional for love.
Viewers were left distraught over the scenes and the death of Cerberus, taking to Twitter to share their heartache.
One fan said: "Absolutely sobbing!" as another tweeted: "This is the saddest thing I’ve ever seen oh my God."
A third said: "Of all the heartbreaking episodes of @itvcorrie over the years I fear this will be up there with the saddest."
Another viewer wrote: "Balling my eyes out at #Corrie tonight," as a fifth said: "Omg crying my eyes out over Cerberus the dog tonight."
