Coronation Street says goodbye to a beloved character next week on the ITV soap in a heartbreaking death.
Ahead of an exit of sorts for one resident, there's tears in store when a much-loved character is killed off - and another character is blamed for their demise.
Evelyn Plummer is left distraught next week, when her beloved dog Cerberus suddenly falls ill and is rushed to the vets.
The character gets some worrying news about his condition, before finding out the cause of Cerberus' ill health.
Just as Evelyn confronts Roy Cropper, blaming him for what has happened, tragedy strikes.
Poor Cerberus dies next week, ahead of Evelyn departing the Cobbles - with actress Maureen Lipman taking a break from the show to focus on a brand new role.
It all kicks off after Evelyn notices something is up with Cerberus, as he doesn't want his food.
After taking him to the vets, she is concerned to be told it could be food poisoning and that tests need to be done.
As Evelyn shares the news with her friend Roy, he reveals he dropped an eccles cake in the café earlier on in the week and he fears Cerberus may have eaten it.
Realising this might have caused his ill health, with the contents and the pastry all being things that can be potentially poisonous to dogs, Evelyn is distressed.
Evelyn tells Roy that if anything happens to Cerberus, she’ll never forgive him.
Sadly later on that day, the vet breaks the news to Evelyn that Cerberus is suffering from kidney failure.
There is nothing that can be done for the beloved pooch, and Evelyn is forced to say an emotional goodbye to her companion.
These are Cerberus' final scenes on the soap following his debut in 2018, and he sadly dies next week.
In the fallout, Roy blames himself for the incident as does Evelyn and she brands his café a "death trap".
Roy tells his niece Nina he’s getting rid of his phone as had he not been distracted, he would never have dropped the cake and Cerberus may still be alive.
But with Evelyn set to depart the show soon, will she and Roy manage to clear the air?
Actress Maureen is heading for the stage and will perform a one woman show, Rose, at the West End later this year.
The stage show tells story of a woman who travels from Nazi-occupied Europe in order to set out on a new life in America after enduring hardship for years on end.
Although Maureen will be leaving Coronation Street for an extended period in order to take to the stage, she will be making a return to the Cobbles.
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
