Chiang Mai: A stillborn child has been found in the freezer of a house refrigerator, more than a year after it was believed to have been left there by the father.
The baby's corpse was wrapped in a towel when it was discovered by a worker hired to renovate a house in tambon Wat Ket of Muang district, according to Pol Maj Gen Thawatchai Pongwiwatchai, commander of Chiang Mai police.
The renovation was being undertaken by Wirat (surname not given), 59, whose mother, Srinoi, owns the house. Ms Srinoi told police she lived in the house last year with a man identified only as Uew, 24, who is Mr Wirat's stepson, as well as Uew's girlfriend. She said the girlfriend became pregnant and gave birth to the stillborn.
Uew brought the corpse home and said he could not bring himself to cremate it since it was his first child. He decided to freeze the corpse after he and the girlfriend were convicted of theft. He is now serving time in Chiang Mai prison.
Before Uew was sent to jail, Ms Srinoi moved to a new house and had no idea what was inside the fridge. Mr Wirat, after returning two weeks ago from a long stay in the US, decided to spruce up his mother's old house.
