What time is Nicola Sturgeon's Covid update today and what to expect

Nicola Sturgeon is due to give her latest update on Covid-19 restrictions to the Scottish Parliament today.

The First Minister is scheduled on the parliament’s schedule to speak this afternoon (January 25) at just after 2pm.

Restrictions on the hospitality industry ended yesterday, with rules easing in pubs and indoor events.

New infections of the Omicron variant have been dropping and this allowed the Scottish Government to lift the restrictions.

However, as of yesterday Edinburgh had the most infections among all the 32 local authorities in Scotland.

The Public Health Scotland (PHS) data shows that Edinburgh had 309 new infections, 2787 across the week and a total of 103,822 since the pandemic started in 2020.

The 528 infections per 100,000 in Edinburgh means the capital city is above the national average, of 492.

It is not believed that any of the restrictions on self isolation will change again at this week’s update but there has been some speculation that some more venues may be added to the vaccine passport list.

Edinburgh Live will bring you the latest updates when the First Minister's speech starts this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Nicola Sturgeon says the Scottish Government were correct have a temporary circuit breaker over the festive period.

When asked if the restrictions over the Christmas period were warranted Ms Sturgeon told the BBC’s Sunday Morning show: “Yes, I think they were.

“Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were in broadly the same place and took broadly the same approach. England took a different approach, as it was entitled to do.

“If you look at the ONS survey, in terms of the detail, around 5.5 per cent of the population of England were estimated to have the virus - it was around 4.5 per cent in Scotland.”
