Coronavirus infection rate now higher than the national average in three areas of Greater Manchester

The coronavirus infection rate is higher than the national average in three boroughs of Greater Manchester. And, according to the latest data, the rate has risen in one area of the region.

With the national average sitting at 91.3 cases per 100,000 people as of May 12, Stockport, Wigan and Trafford have rates higher than the UK's average. However, the data has shown hospitalisations with coronavirus are continuing to fall, as are deaths across the region.

Stockport continues to have the highest coronavirus infection rate in Greater Manchester, with a rate of 99.9 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending May 12. The lowest infection rate is in Oldham, where the rate is 48.8 cases per 100,000 people.

In Greater Manchester as a whole, the infection rate is now 81.0 cases per 100,000 population. The infection rate in the region is lower than the national average, which is 91.3 cases per 100,000 people.

A total of 2,297 people tested positive for coronavirus across Greater Manchester in the week which ended on May 12. The Greater Manchester weekly total has decreased by 295 cases compared to the previous week, which means the infection rate was down 11 per cent in the last week.

Hospital admissions

In the week ending on May 08, a total of 268 patients were admitted to Greater Manchester NHS hospitals with Covid-19. That is 105 fewer than the week before, a fall of 64 per cent

On Tuesday May 10, there were 9 Mechanical Ventilation (MV) beds occupied by Covid patients in Greater Manchester NHS hospitals. That is eight fewer than a week earlier.

Deaths

In the week ending May 12, a total of 38 people died within 28 days of a positive Covid test across Greater Manchester, which is 11 fewer than the week before. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been a total of 993,061 confirmed coronavirus cases in Greater Manchester. There has been a total of 9,310 deaths.

Manchester

The trend is down in Manchester, where there were 469 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending May 12, which is 11 fewer than the previous 7 days. That is down by 2 per cent compared to the previous week. The latest infection rate in Manchester is 84.4 cases per 100,000 people, which is lower than the national average.

Salford

Salford saw a total of 214 cases in the week ending May 12, which is 43 fewer than the previous week. That is a fall of 17 per cent. In Salford, the most recent coronavirus infection rate is now 81.5 cases per 100,000 people.

Stockport

In Stockport, there were 294 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending May 12, which is 10 more than the previous 7 days. Stockport has the highest infection rate in the region. The infection rate in Stockport is up slightly compared with the previous day and the week-on-week trend is up by four per cent.

Bolton

There was a fall of 26 per cent in cases in Bolton over the week ending May 12, and the infection rate is now 69.7 cases per 100,000 population. Bolton recorded 201 positive Covid-19 tests over the seven-day period, and that is 69 fewer than the previous week.

Tameside

Tameside is an area where the trend is down. The latest infection rate here is 66.9 cases per 100,000 people. There were 152 cases recorded in Tameside, which is 60 fewer than the previous week - a fall of 28 per cent.

Oldham

Oldham, which has the lowest infection rate in the region, recorded 116 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending May 12, which is 50 fewer than the previous 7 days. The coronavirus infection rate in Oldham is now 48.8 cases per 100,000 people and is down by 30 per cent week-on-week.

Wigan

There were 311 positive tests over the last week in Wigan, which is 22 fewer than in the previous week. The week-on-week trend in Wigan is down by seven per cent and the latest infection rate is 94.0 cases per 100,000 people.

Bury

Bury recorded 164 coronavirus cases, which is 17 fewer than in the previous seven days. The latest infection rate in Bury is 86.0 cases per 100,000 people and that is down nine per cent week-on-week.

Rochdale

In Rochdale, the number of cases is down by three per cent compared to the previous week - leaving the infection rate at 69.3 cases per 100,000 population. There were 155 positive Covid-19 tests in Rochdale in the week ending May 12, which was 4 fewer than the previous 7 days.

Trafford

In Trafford, the latest infection rate is 93.0 cases per 100,000 people and the number of cases has gone down by 12 per cent. A total of 221 people tested positive for Covid in Trafford over the seven days ending on May 12, which is 29 fewer than the week before.
