Tony Maudsley has signed up to Coronation Street for another year.
The Benidorm star plays fan favourite character George Shuttleworth - who joined the Cobbles when he took on his late father's funeral business - on the ITV soap and he was very happy to share the exciting news with his fans.
Taking to Twitter, Tony revealed he had put pen to paper to appear on the soap until at least mid-2023, with fans thrilled to see him staying on the programme for the next 15 months at least.
He wrote: "That's me (and George) all signed up to Corrie till at least July 2023 and I couldn't be happier! #HappyPlace."
Fans took to social media to congratulate him.
"That is great, loved you in the street… you are a great addition and a fine actor, your humour and the way you play the character is pure class. I’m sure you will become a firm cast member for years to come…. If you want to. Good luck," one wrote.
A second added: "So happy for you,Tony. xx," whilst a third joked that it meant there would be more death on the cobbles soon. "That’s great news, it also means more deaths on the cobbles to keep George in business, who’s next?" they wrote.
"They’re going to be making plenty of use of the undertaker’s set then bad news for characters. Seriously though I’m glad you’re one of the best," another fan agreed, penning on Twitter.
Since joining the show, George has sparked up a relationship with Eileen Grimshaw.
Speaking in 2021, he said: "It has taken a while, he has been eased into the show very gradually over the past 12 months.
"He was flagged as a new love interest for Eileen but if he had got with her too quickly people wouldn't have liked it, it would have jarred as the viewers are so protective over Eileen. Sue has been on the show 21 years and but with all the problems Eileen has had with men, I think the viewers are on George's side. He makes her smile, he is a sensitive softy."
He added: "They want Eileen to be happy and in George, she might finally have found that, if she would only let her guard down!"
