Coronation Street fans were in bits as a beloved Weatherfield character passed away in heartbreaking scenes. Viewers of the ITV soap were warned of upsetting scenes as Evelyn Plummer was forced to have her trusted greyhound Cerberus put to sleep after he fell seriously ill.
Tragedy struck on the cobbles after, in Monday night's episode, Evelyn calls in Roy Cropper's cafe with Cerberus in tow. When Cerberus later showed no interest in his tea, Evelyn was concerned.
With Cerberus still sick in Wednesday night's instalment, a concerned Tyrone Dobbs insisted that he and his gran took him to the vets. When the vet suggested food poisoning, a guilty Roy revealed he'd dropped an Eccles cake in the café and feared Cerberus may have eaten it.

Aware that currants are poisonous to dogs, an angry and worried Evelyn, played by Maureen Lipman, told Roy that if anything happened to Cerberus, she’d never forgive him. The vet then broke the devastating news that Cerberus was suffering from kidney failure.
He said Cerberus was unlikely to improve due his age and the kindest thing would be to put him to sleep and Evelyn finally agreed, saying "I don't want to see him suffer." The usually stoic Evelyn was in tears as she wrapped her boy in a blanket and said goodbye to him for the last time. "Thank you for being the best boy, the prince of Weatherfield," she said about her 'greatest companion' as the vet administered the injection.
@50pMillionaire tweeted: "The bafta goes to the dog." And @feistygal16 also said: "That dog deserves a bafta!" @cherrieshobi gasped: "Devastating corrie omg #Corrie #coronationstreet." And @MrsP_A said: "Bloody hell tears."
Some fans complained that the heartwrenching scenes were 'too much.' @amz07 said: "Aww this is too much." And @rattycastle tweeted: "Corrie way too much showing the poor dog getting an injection." @EssexViews exclaimed: "OMG."
@joy9kat asked: "Do they really have to show this! Totally unnecessary." @nowbigbrother echoed: "There was no need for the dog to die." And the Conversation Street Podcast @ConversationStr said: "I’m only getting through these Cerberus scenes by laughing to myself about how lazy greyhounds are and how much the dog is probably enjoying laying around and being petted by Maureen Lipman."
But @jadecjordan1 applauded the decision to screen this storyline and invited other Twitter users to share pictures of their own pets in tribute. "Pet grief never gets spoken about enough," they said. "It’s a whole different level of pain and heart break. "Honestly I can’t stand the thought of so many suffering in silence. Show me your babies that have crossed the rainbow bridge, keep their memory alive - I’ll go first, my Louis." And @LaurenStubley said: "Can’t watch this Poor Cerberus. Glad they’re doing this storyline though."
