Coronation's Concert memorable moments - from Tom Cruise Top Gun show to cringey dad jokes

The magnificent Coronation concert featured singers like Paloma Faith, Kate Perry, Take That and Olly Murs perform in front of King Charles and the Royal Family yesterday with some quite stand out moments that won't be easily forgotten.

The historical event was reportedly turned down by the likes of Harry Styles, Adele and Kylie Minogue who were all offered the opportunity to belt out a song for the newly crowned King and Queen, the Mirror reports.

However, the monarch and around 20,000 members of the public were still able to enjoy a spectacular live music show on Sunday evening with Lionel Richie taking to a grand piano to perform "Easy" before livening things up with his iconic 1983 hit single "All Night Long".

While royal fans were mostly impressed with the spectacular display of talent at Windsor Castle to celebrate the Coronation, some beady eyed social media users spotted a few rather cringey comments and awkward errors during the lavish event.

Here we take a closer look at the top cringe worthy moments from last night's Coronation concert..

Katy Perry's unusual dress turned heads (BBC)

Some Brits didn't even get the opportunity to form an opinion of their own on the awkward Coronation concert moments as hundreds were unimpressed with the event before it even started due to its "execrable" line-up.

The show was presented live on the BBC by Kirsty Young who invited viewers to "crack open the fizz and settle down for a night to remember". However, many ignored her advice and took to Twitter instead to claim they wouldn't be tuning in for the event at Windsor Castle.

One person who didn't watch the show tweeted: "Just like the Coronation, I will not be watching the concert. Apart from anything else, the line up is execrable, as you might expect. So, Take That! #CoronationConcert".

Another wrote:‌ "They had to do some digging in the career graveyard for this lineup #CoronationConcert”. A third commented: "He’s the king of england this is the best lineup he could get #CoronationConcert."

Tom Cruise's 'wingman' offer

Tom Cruise took to the skies for the Coronation Concert (BBC)

Hollywood actor Tum Cruise took to the skies for his appearance at the Coronation with the Top Gun star sharing his message to the monarch from the cockpit of his own plane he was impressively flying.

Tom told the King: "Pilot to pilot, Your Majesty, you can be my wingman any time."

One BBC viewer watching the cameo last night joked: "Tom Cruise is trying to recruit his latest scientology member".

Another amused viewer wrote :"Not tom cruise you can be my wingman anytiming King Charles. I'm weak." A third questioned: "Bit confused by the bit where Tom Cruise said it'd be ok for the King to be his wingman."

James Nesbitt's poemJames Nesbitt's poem

James Nesbitt's role at the Coronation concert was not particularly cringe worthy but definitely left a few viewers feeling extremely uncomfortable.

The Irish actor spoke of all the wonders of the UK in his enthusiastic speech but many Irish viewers felt his appearance at the event was a 'slap in the face' given that only weeks before hand he had spoken of his hope for a United Ireland in the near future.

One person remarked: "Bit weird having James Nesbitt, a bloke who wants to kick the UK off the island of Ireland, participating in the #CoronationConcert".

Another agreed: "James Nesbitt? Why? #CoronationConcert".

A third quipped: "Where's St Patrick when you need him to abolish James Nesbitt from Ireland."

Miss Piggy

Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog also appeared at the Coronation (BBC)

Despite the Coronation being a monumental British event, much of the royal concert featured performers from overseas with even some American fictional characters performing on screen during the broadcast.

While King Charles III and Queen Camilla may have appeared puzzled as Miss Piggy and Kermit The Frog took over the stage, Princess Charlotte and Prince George were absolutely delighted by their arrival.

The iconic Muppet Show characters joined the Coronation Concert host, Hugh Bonneville with Miss Piggy being unable to hold her desire for the Notting Hill actor.

As she flirted with the English actor, the cameras panned over to Prince George and Princess Charlotte who were in fits of giggles and were chatting with each other over the strange encounter.

However viewers at home did not find this as funny with one unimpressed person scoffing: "Kermit and Miss Piggy…who next? Mr Blobby? [Man shaking his head emoji] #Coronation #CoronationConcert."

Dad jokes

Prince William made a few dad jokes on stage (BBC)

Many a dad joke was told at the Coronation concert from the future King of England to showbiz stars all cracking a few of their best lines.

Prince William was invited up to the stage at Windsor Caste to pay homage to his newly crowned father and tell the monarch how proud his family are of him.

The Prince of Wales started his speech with a dad joke as he referenced headliner Lionel Richie's song and promised not to "go on all night long" before paying an emotional tribute to his dad.

Host Hugh Bonneville was unable to help himself either as he kicked off the night at Windsor Castle saying: ""Doesn't it look nice? It's all thanks to His Majesty who was weeding at 7am this morning.

"We are of course delighted and honoured to be joined by King Charles III whose lifelong passion for the arts we will be celebrating throughout the show.

"He himself is a painter, an artist, the artist formerly known as Prince."

Katy Perry's nod to Britain

American popstar Katy Perry has always been a big fan of British culture and English men, with the I Kissed a Girl star currently in a relationship with actor Orlando Bloom who she welcomed her first child with.

So the American Idol judge will likely be aware of the nation's love for Quality Street chocolates and be prepared to read the tweets regarding her outfit of choice for the royal concert.

Katy took to the stage in a huge gold dress on Sunday evening with viewers at home poking fun at her outfit choice.

One joked on Twitter: "Very patriotic of Katy Perry to come dressed as the penny toffee out of Quality Street #CoronationConcert," while another amused viewer commented: "Love how Katy Perry is wearing a Quality Street wrapper #CoronationConcert."

However, many spotted a mistake from the pop princess when it came to her choice of songs.

One viewer wrote: "Kinda hilarious that Katy Perry sang Firework which references the 4th of July at the British King’s Coronation". Another echoed: "Katy Perry censoring “4th of July” from her #CoronationConcert performance of Firework is so noticeable it’s painful."

A third remarked: "Only the British #Royal Family could invite an American to come and sing about the joys of the 4th of July! #CoronationConcert #KatyPerry #Firework".

Kirsty Young's blunder

Nicole Scherzinger's interview was interrupted by King Charles' early arrival (BBC)

Nicole Scherzinger gave a show stopping performance on stage but it was her interview with Kirsty Young that got people talking online.

The 54-year-old presenter covered the BBC footage of the event alongside Jordan Banjo, 30 and Clara Amfo, 38 who were backstage.

Jordan has been interviewing Nicole, 44 when King Charles and Queen Camilla arrived earlier than expected which prompted a voiceover from Kirsty.

She said: "And there of course we see the arrival of their Majesties the King and Queen. There's not very much that could upstage Nicole Sershinger, uh you know who I mean".

Katy later addressed the error and gave another go at correctly pronouncing Nicole's surname as she said: "Very sorry to cut you off in your prime [Jordan]. I have to tell you it was all go here. Suddenly the King and Queen arrived and we all thought 'what, wait a minute'."

Jordan responded by saying: "If anyone was gonna cut my time off with Nicole Scherzinger it had to be the King and Queen. That's fine".

Kirsty reacted by poking fun at her earlier mistake as she said: "I couldn't even say Nicole Scherzinger, never mind apologise for it".

Olly Murs debuting an American accent

Olly Murs was criticised online for his outfit choice (BBC)

Olly Murs took a roasting on social media as the Coronation Concert aired with BBC viewers criticising everything from his outfit choice to one of his biggest hit records.

The former X Factor's contestant's new unexpected accent also got a lot of people talking one as the British singer performed Dance With Me Tonight at Windsor Castle last night.

One Twitter used asked: "What's with Olly Murs and the bizarre American accent?? #CoronationConcert". Another wrote: "#CoronationConcert Olly Murs' fake American accent! [sick emoji],"

One very unimpressed viewer brutally tweeted: "Olly Murs would sing Dance With Me Tonight at the opening of a packet of crisps #CoronationConcert."
