Corner: Tate Modern to launch new café and small plates bar on the Southbank

The Tate Modern will open an evening bar and small plates venue for the first time next month, connecting the gallery to a new riverside lawn.

Corner, launching on July 7, will act as a sweeping, windowed café by day, its terrace opening out onto the Southbank.

Come evening, the space will serve a menu of charcuterie, cheeses, and light dishes alongside cocktails, beers and wines, all sourced from independent British producers and makers.

On the menu are dishes such as fried cauliflower with ginger and soy, chipotle corn ribs, meatballs with hot pepper sauce, and fried new potatoes with chimichurri and sour cream.

Corner was designed by Holland Harvey, with wooden furniture from Goldfinger and tabletops created by Spared using coffee grounds from the Tate Modern’s coffee shop.

The artist Nathan Coley’s illuminated sculpture, We Must Cultivate Our Garden, is to be installed outside.

“Corner at Tate Modern connects art with food and drink,” said Hamish Anderson, CEO of Tate Enterprises.

“Corner will welcome all – families enjoying a day out together to friends meeting for an after-work drink, and from local Londoners to visitors from overseas…

“Corner is international but rooted in British suppliers. Ingredients are thoughtfully chosen by our team, while drinks are playful and often inspired by Tate’s exhibitions.”

Anderson added profits from Corner will go towards supporting the gallery and said the project will also help to “deepen” Tate’s sustainability agenda.

“The project has allowed us to deepen our sustainability agenda and learn new ways of working. We have taken on new suppliers, adopted new practices, and thought about how we can do everything with lower impact.”

Corner will open between 10am and 6pm on Sundays and Mondays, and from 10am until 11pm between Tuesdays and Saturdays.
