A Cork pub thrust into the public eye today after a customer complaint has said staff are 'extremely upset' over a 'mistake' that has since blown up.
The popular Gallagher's Gastropub on McCurtain Street came forward as the venue that was the talk of Irish radio this morning after a tweet went viral over the cost of brown sauce.
The disgruntled customer’s tweet ended up being sent to the Neil Prendeville Show on RedFM, including a picture of a bill for two Irish breakfasts that showed a €1.50 charge for 'brown sauce'.
A debate quickly kicked off around the cost of living in Ireland as it continues to increase as well as the major issues facing the hospitality sector at the moment.
Restauranteurs have been very vocal over their struggles to find staff while also trying to cope with the rising costs for everything from light and heating to ingredients going through the roof.
However, the owners of Gallaghers - which has a 4.5-star rating on Tripadvisor and is widely regarded as one of the top places for quality and value on Leeside - took to social media this afternoon to explain what had happened.
In the Facebook post, they said; "Yesterday one of our new team members made a mistake while trying to accommodate a customer’s request.
"When the mistake was brought to our attention we immediately contacted the customer to apologise for the mistake and made it clear we do not charge for brown sauce.
“We explained to the customer we do charge for our homemade relishes, the gentleman was very understanding and explained he had his own pub and that these things happen.
"We invited him back for a pint or a sandwich on us when he was passing again."
The owner’s went on to lament the fact that the bill was snapped and sent on to a popular radio talk show "without mentioning that the matter had been resolved to his satisfaction"
"It was then published on their social media platforms, prompting a response which was blown out of proportion and extremely upsetting for the poor staff member involved."
"To be clear, we do not charge for condiments or table sauces."
Gallaghers has in the past been voted Best Gastro Pub in the South West region at the Irish Food Awards.
