Cordon in place around row of shops after blaze breaks out on street

A cordon was put in place around a row of shops after a fire broke out in Levenshulme this morning.

The blaze broke out over the ground and first floor at a terraced property on Kingsway at around 7.40am. Firefighters, paramedics and police were scrambled to the scene.

The fire service said everyone inside the property was out by the time crews arrived. One woman was checked over on the scene after suffering smoke inhalation.

Five fire engines were used to extinguish the fire as a 'large amount of smoke' billowed from the building. A video clip showed a row of shops and businesses taped off with a number of emergency vehicles stationed on the road.

Operations have since been scaled down. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed officers were on the scene to assist with the cordon.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At around 7:40am this morning (Tuesday 4 July) we received the first report about a fire on Kingsway, Manchester, involving the ground floor and first floor of a terraced property.

"Five fire engines, a turntable ladder and a drone unit were quickly mobilised to the incident. The occupants of the property were out when crews arrived, and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reels, covering jets and other specialist equipment to tackle the fire, which was generating a large amount of smoke, in sectors.

"One woman suffering the effects of smoke inhalation was given precautionary checks by a GMFRS trauma technician. Crews have scaled down their operations but remain at the scene at this time."
