Coral Gold Cup 2024: Colonel Harry Heads The Newbury Field

The Coral Gold Cup runners for Saturday’s 2024 renewal at Newbury are taking shape as a competitive field look to join past greats that have won the race that will still be referred to as the Hennessy by many.

Jamie Snowden Looks To Follow-Up Last Year’s Coral Gold Cup Win?

12 months ago, the Jamie Snowden yard were celebrating one of their biggest successes when Datsalrightgino powered home in the Coral Gold Cup – and they will be looking for more of the same in 2024.

Sadly their 2023 winner was fatally injured in his next race in the Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham, but the same connections will be trying to honour his memory by winning the race again – this time with Colonel Harry, who is also owned by the GD Partnership.

This 7 year-old has been propping up the market with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK all week and despite if being a tight heat, many feel he’ll be going off favourite.

Colonel Harry has won two of his seven chase starts, with the last coming over a fair sort in Trelawne, who franked the form by winning the Graduation Chase at Haydock last time out.

Since then, he ran a respectable sixth in the Turners Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and blew away the cobwebs with a second in a Listed Chase up at Carlisle in early November – a race that should have him spot-on for this.

Willie Mullins Looking For His Second Coral Gold Cup Win

Having won the British Trainers’ title last season – Willie Mullins will be keen to do so again and with £140k to the winner of the Coral Gold Cup there’s every chance he’ll have at runner heading to the Newbury race.

He’s got just one horse racing entry – which is Horantzau d’Airy and owned by Rich Ricci, who was responsible for last week’s Betfair Chase winner Royale Pagaille.

This 7 year-old has been seen running second to the classy Flooring Porter in the Kerry National at Listowel this season (watch below) and backed that up with a fair silver in the Munster National at Limerick in October.

Mullins has won the Coral Gold Cup just once in the past – in 2017 with the 8 year-old Total Recall, who was ridden by Paul Townend.

Did You Know Trainer Paul Nicholls Has Ridden TWO Coral Gold Cup Winners?

The 14-time British Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has won the Coral Gold Cup three times as a handler, but not many people know he’s also ridden the winner of this top Newbury race twice.

Yes, Nicholls trained Strong Flow to win in 2003 and the mighty Denman to win twice (2007 and 2009) – both times under welter burdens of 11st 12lbs.

However, the Ditcheat man has also won the Coral Gold Cup twice as a jockey – and also in back-to-back seasons.

The first came in 1986 on a horse called Broadheath and the second the following year (1987) on Playschool. Both horses were trained by David Barons.

Nicholls has one runner this year – Kandoo Kid.

Over the years, the race, has also seen greats like Denman (two wins), Bobs Worth, One Man and Burrough Hill Lad land the prize.
