A knife-wielding man was shot dead by police after he tried to stab a police dog following a ten-hour standoff.
Bodycam footage released by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office shows the standoff on Springs Road, in the city of Jacksonville, Florida, on April 12.
The video shows a SWAT unit preparing to confront the perpetrator, named as 38-year-old Matvey Klimenko, in a residential area.
A woman, allegedly the perpetrator's ex-girlfriend, said that he had broken into her home and threatened her at knifepoint. She was able to text a friend who called the police.
The SWAT unit can suddenly be seen attempting to chase Klimenko, who appears to be trying to flee, with the K9 dog let off its lead by its handler to assist in the chase.
The suspect can then be seen holding a knife in his right hand as the police order him to drop it.
The officers then fire several shots at the suspect who falls to the ground.
Klimenko was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said: "Arriving officers negotiated with Klimenko for several hours in an attempt to have him surrender and were able to guide his hostage out of a window."
Sheriff T. K. Waters said the woman had tried to get away from Klimenko, but he found her new address by accessing her email and found messages between her and her estate agent.
They also confirmed that he had several outstanding warrants for his arrest.
Klimenko had reportedly served a year and a half in prison prior to his release in 2010. His file includes arrests for carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a firearm by a convicted felon.
Local media reported that he also had a history of domestic violence, with both his mother and his sister having filed restraining orders against him.
Jacksonville is a large coastal city with a population of just over 950,000 people.
It has a high rate of violent crime at 6.87 per 1,000 residents. This is compared to a rate of 3.92 across the state as a whole.
Police often face dangerous situations in the line of duty.
A female NYPD cop was recently smashed in the head with a glass bottle from behind during a horrific broad daylight attack.
The injured police officer was conducting smoke shop inspections with the New York City Sheriff’s Department when she was brutally hit in the head by 45-year-old suspect Jose Garcia.
The uniformed officer was on a busy pavement on 231st Street and Broadway in Kingsbridge when the incident happened at around 2pm local time (7pm GMT) on Monday, April 17.
Mr Garcia can be seen swinging at another officer standing next to her before he's pushed to the ground by police after the sickening attack.
