An investigation is under way following the vandalism and stealing incident at Cockle Creek.

Police have been told that about 11.30pm on Tuesday August 27, wires were stolen from a signal box in the rail corridor.

The theft resulted in the disruption of train movements across the network. Buses replaced several services, while trains that did run from Newcastle to Sydney were delayed up to 25 minutes and those coming the opposite direction experienced 40 minute delays. Drivers also had to stop on platforms or between stations for extended periods while going through the affected area.

Repair crews were assessing the damage, but the delays were expected to continue throughout the day.

Lake Macquarie police commenced inquiries into the incident and have urged anyone with information that might assist to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or information can be left via the online portal https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.
