Cop seriously injured after being hit by traffic cone before Hearts vs FC Zurich match

A police officer has been seriously injured after being hit by a traffic cone before the Hearts clash with FC Zurich in Edinburgh city centre on Thursday.

The incident took place shortly after 7pm on McLeod Street in the capital when a traffic cone was thrown during the escort of football fans to Tynecastle Park Stadium.

The officer was severely hurt and had to receive treatment at the scene as a result of the dramatic event. The force are now appealing for witnesses in a bid to trace those responsible.

Anyone with any information on the incident is being urged to come forward. Hearts ended up losing 1-0 to the away team, making it 3-1 on aggregate and sparking the end of their Europa League dream.

Detective Constable Andy Lambert, of Gayfield CID, said: “An officer was injured as a result of this incident so we are appealing for anyone who was in the area and witnessed what happened to get in touch.

“I would also encourage anyone who may have video footage of the incident to contact us.

“Anyone with information should contact police via 101, quoting incident 2449 of 25 August. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
