Converted ex-battle ambulance provides adventure holiday with a difference

A new travel trend is hitting the road with Landervans offering a rugged alternative to classic campers. Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes are being used as an accommodation option with a difference and adventurous holidaymakers are snapping them up.

The landervan collection, operated by Cool Camping, is a 15-strong line up of Land Rover conversions, sleeping up to five people and many with room for a dog. Sturdy wheels, a classic 4x4 look and a guaranteed ability to tackle any terrain makes the Great British Land Rover the adventure vehicle of choice.

Choose from ex-army Land Rover ambulances with converted interiors to modern Land Rovers with pop-up roof tents. Prices start from £130 a night.

Dog Friendly Land Rover Betty

Betty is an iconic Land Rover Defender 110 fitted with an award winning iKamper roof tent which can be set up in less than two minutes. She also comes with is an iKamper awning perfect for shade and a space to relax and cook while the Skyview window means you can fall asleep under the stars.

Fern the Lady Camper

Fern is a dark green uniquely converted Defender 110 fitted with either one or two rooftents depending on the size of group, while offering loads of space for equipment and luggage in the converted back. Within the rooftent there is a larger-than-queen-sized bed, with a comfortable mattress with skylight windows with blinds and attachable large annexe room.

Fern has a dog hammock installed on the rear bench to create a cosy and safe place for a four-legged friend to travel and sleep in. From £657 for three nights based on up to four sharing.

Stirling the Battlefield Ambulance

Stirling is an ex-battlefield ambulance, now fitted out with heating, seating and a dining and kitchen space, with beds for a family of four. There’s a shower and toilet for real motorhome comforts but with its classic 4x4 looks, camouflage paintwork and Red Cross emblems, this is a vehicle that stands out from crowd.

Bluebell

Bluebell is a true classic four sleeper Overland prepared Defender 110 TD5 that has travelled as far as Africa. An easy to operate, full length standing height Dormobile roof opens the back up into a light and spacious camper.

In the roof there are two pull out bunk beds and the skylights offer a gorgeous view of the stars. The sofa seat in the back folds down into a double bed and she is equipped with everything for a camping adventure from the wine fridge to the kitchen sink.

From £390 for three nights based on two adults and two kids sharing. Minimum driver ages range from 18–25 years of age, dependent on depot location.
