Controversial new Armie Hammer film available online for just 48 hours

A controversial new film starring Armie Hammer has been made available to watch for free on social media in a 48-hour window.

In Citizen Vigilante, by German filmmaker Uwe Boll, Hammer plays a businessman-turned-vigilante who takes justice into his own hands, targeting violent criminals, rapists and corrupt judges.

The action-thriller, which was released earlier this month, has faced criticism due to its extreme violence and alleged anti-immigration message, with Germany refusing to give it a rating and effectively banning the release.

A post to Citizen Vigilante’s official X account on Thursday shared the full 90-minute film, which it described as “the movie Hollywood doesn’t want you to see”.

The film was made available to watch for free on the platform until 3pm BST on Saturday June 27.

In a series of additional posts, director, writer and producer Boll explained that his film had been uploaded “exclusively” on X for the “whole world to see”.

The filmmaker, 61, also shared a video to his personal X account on Friday addressing the controversy surrounding the film.

He said Citizen Vigilante “represents 50% of the population” who think that “we cannot continue with these unbelievable, wrong migration policies in Europe and America”.

In an interview with The Telegraph last week, Boll discussed the film being banned in his home country and said he felt this was “on purpose”, adding: “It was a deliberate censorship decision”.

He said: “I hired a lawyer to complain about it, but we lost in a six-two vote, as I was told that the film was inciting violence against migrants.”

Boll also told the publication that he chose Hammer for the lead role “because he was cancelled and wanted to work”.

The career of the US actor, 39, was derailed in 2021 when a series of accusations of sexual abuse and misconduct was made against him, which he vehemently denied.

In 2023, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office decided not to charge Hammer in connection to the allegations.

Hammer had voiced his desire to return to acting, and told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month he did not get any job offers for five years.

He is best known for starring alongside Timothee Chalamet in the Hollywood star’s breakout film Call Me by Your Name.

Hammer has also appeared in Sir Kenneth Branagh’s Death On The Nile in 2022; The Social Network as the Winklevoss twins; in The Man From Uncle 2015 film remake and in the Lone Ranger opposite Johnny Depp.

Since Citizen Vigilante was filmed, Hammer has worked on three more low-budget productions: A Western called Frontier Crucible, the thriller Night Driver and a film in Bulgaria which is yet to be announced.
