A controversial gas pipeline is a step closer after a government streamlined assessments and approvals for a proposed $3 billion project.

The Queensland government on Wednesday took steps to pave the way for the North to East Australia Pipeline stage which is set to carry gas from the Northern Territory's Beetaloo Basin.
