Contractors, private entities to face whip if parks poorly maintained

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation will terminate the contracts of private contractors and cancel MoUs of individual parties for poor upkeep of city parks.

City corporation commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi said the corporation has fined ₹10. 90 lakh since October last year from contractors, for poor upkeep.

“Contractors from zone four have been fined ₹2. 97 lakhs which is the highest. We have pulled them up for shortage of labour, deficiency in technical operators and inadequate staff,” the commissioner said.

Deputy commissioner (education) D Sneha, who is currently incharge of the parks department, said inspections on park maintenance are being held regularly, and contractors are being pulled up. “If necessary, we may also terminate their contracts,” she said.

On Monday, the corporation issued a demi-official letter to its regional deputy commissioners to ensure zonal officers carry out inspections of parks, centre medians and traffic islands.

The civic body has said if the parks, centre medians and traffic islands are not maintained as per the standards prescribed in the memorandum of understanding between the GCC and the adopter, then the MoU will be revoked.

Regional deputy commissioner (central) Sheik Abdul Rahaman said reviews will take place every week.

“We may give three warnings to the private entities who have adopted parks. If they continue to default, we will terminate the contracts,” he said.
