A young construction worker has died after an accident on a building site next to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital.
Emergency services were called to the site in New Lambton Heights following reports a man was trapped about 9am on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene before he was taken to the nearby hospital in a critical condition, police said in a statement.
The man, who has not yet been identified, later died.
It's understood he was working on the site of the John Hunter Hospital redevelopment.
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park offered his condolences to the man's family, friends and colleagues.
"This is distressing for everyone involved and support and counselling is available for workers, staff and their families during this difficult time," he said.
Police established a crime scene on Jacaranda Drive which has been examined by specialist police.
A report will be prepared for the coroner and SafeWork NSW has been notified.
