Conor McGregor sent a good luck message to Katie Taylor encouraging her to “make history” ahead of her undisputed title clash with Amanda Serrano.
He tweeted his support and confirmed he would be supporting the Bray boxer during her fight at Madison Square Gardens in New York.
Katie, 35, and her 33-year-old Puerto Rican opponent made history overnight as they traded blows in front of a sold-out arena as Taylor looked to maintain her undefeated record.
McGregor posted: “Let’s go tonight, Katie Taylor! Making history once again, this time in the famed Madison Square Garden!
“With you all the way champ.”
The pair have met numerous times and it’s no surprise McGregor lent his support for what Katie herself acknowledged was the toughest fight of her career.
YouTube star Jake Paul, who is in Serrano’s camp, believes she has now eclipsed McGregor in terms of her success and described her as “awesome”.
Just hours before the fight yesterday, Taoiseach Micheal Martin sent his best wishes to Katie as he also took to Twitter.
He tweeted: “Very best wishes Katie Taylor ahead of your TaylorSerrano fight at Madison Square Gardens.
“A historic moment for women’s boxing. You are a wonderful ambassador for Irish sport, and for [Ireland].” Hollywood A-lister Charleze Theron also rowed in behind the
Irish pro and in support of women’s boxing.
The Mad Max Thunder Road star tweeted: “About f***ing time!
“Only took 140 years to get two female fighters to headline MSG, but Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano did the damn thing. You ladies inspire the hell out of me and women everywhere – can’t wait to watch! #TaylorSerrano.”
Both Taylor and Serrano are set to earn a record payday for the event rumoured to run to a seven-figure
purse.
